Co-sleeping - Is this the right solution for you and your baby?

by Ebet Sanders

Since civilization began, mothers have the advantage of the convenience of sleeping with their babies. It is only in the last two centuries, among western industrialized nations and slept separately from the baby has become appropriate. Research shows that infants who share a bed with their mothers cry less often and sister for a longer time. Co-sleeping will provide additional food at night and added protection for your child. Sleeping with the mother gives a baby a steady supply of feelings and sensations that could possibly compensation for neurological immaturity has a child at birth.

Co-sleeping May provide some protection against SIDS (sudden death syndrome child). Children who sleep with their mothers sleep less soundly and have increased awareness of maternal presence. Some SIDS deaths are associated with arousal deficiencies in the part of a child. Increased arousal of the child in the presence of the mother could make a difference in the number of SIDS deaths experienced in this country each year, although it has not yet been scientifically proven.

The habits, parents must be considered in determining if co-sleeping is right for a particular baby. Smoking, drugs, alcohol or are dominant factors in cases where a baby was accidentally smothered. Co-sleeping has been practicing for thousands of years until relatively recently. The advantages of co-sleeping are numerous, and the disadvantages are few. Use your own judgement and take into consideration when deciding on your lifestyle if co-sleeping is the right thing for you and your baby. Changing views in the past few decades have made a practice co-sleeping undesirable in some cultures. Our ancestors routinely slept with their babies as a means of protection and convenience. Only you can decide if co-sleeping is for his family.

Modern Crib - Finding the Perfect Crib for Your Infant

by Randi Reese

Finding the perfect crib for your new baby is the first big decision you will make about your baby. Infants spend many hours in their crib so it needs to be a safe and serene place where they can rest pleasantly.

The modern crib is both functional and comfortable. It is a design statement as well as a place for baby to sleep.

It is important to remember that functionality is important. While you may like the particular design of a modern crib you need to be realistic as well about its purpose.

Safe

Cribs manufactured recently all must comply with specific safety standards. These standards are continually being updated to allow for the safest environment for infants as possible. New cribs all conform to these standards. However, be sure that the crib is safe. Slats should be no further than 2+3/8 inches apart to prevent a baby from becoming trapped between them.

Adjustable

Most modern baby cribs feature a way to lower the side rail. This is a convenience feature for the parents. Make sure that you test the side rail mechanism and that it can be easily operated with one hand yet is not too easily pushed down. Mattress supports can also be adjusted to position the baby closer to the adult. The mattress needs to be lowered when the child can pull himself up to the side. Be sure that your modern crib has this ability.

Frame

The crib frame should be sturdy and should not wobble. It should be assembled properly and there should be no exposed hardware or pieces which the baby could reach. Modern frames may look different to you so be sure to ask for assistance if you are going to assemble the crib at home.

Children's Eczema - Keep the Skin Moisturized

by Ron King

The exact reasons for eczema remain a puzzle despite all our medical knowledge. Sufferers are aware that they have an allergic reaction to an external substance which brings on the condition. The condition known as baby eczema usually starts with a red rash on the infants face but this gradually gets worse until the skin becomes ridged and cracked. Although the problem is widespread around the world; in the USA as many as 20% of infants will be treated for this complaint at some point.

Fortunately, most of these cases of have cleared up before the child reaches 2 years old. For a small number of children this skin complaint does not disappear when they are young but continues into adulthood. This is primarily a condition suffered by babies and young children although it can affect someone of any age. Unfortunately most people have suffered with this since they were at least 5 years of age but around 33% will have contracted the condition by the time they reached their 1st birthday.

The most common type in babies is atopic eczema and this type of baby eczema is characterized by itching, and red, scaly skin on the scalp, face, arms or legs. Usually hereditary, atopic eczema is often thought to be triggered by a baby's skin drying out. Often the trigger mechanism is either the detergent or fabric conditioner used to wash the baby's clothes and this can also be the trigger for the condition in adults as well. It has also discovered that baby eczema was more likely if the mother gave up breastfeeding early which could mean that breast milk may contain something that protects the infant.

Of course we must not neglect some respiratory complaints that can exacerbate the condition. Mothers who have asthma are also more likely to have a baby that has the condition but allergic rhinitis and food allergies can also play a part. Specialists in food allergies believe that up to 3 cases in ten of childhood cases are because the child has a food allergy; discovering the foodstuffs responsible should be a relatively simple matter, which once this is done, can be removed from the diet completely. Removing the guilty foods comes down to trial and error although there are some common foodstuffs that should be looked at first including:

  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Any type meal prepared using eggs
  • Peanuts

Baby eczema can also be caused as a result of the baby receiving antibiotics when the mother gave birth to her child. Treating babies requires a little more thought as they cannot tell us what irritates them so only bath them in lukewarm water and use fragrance free, hypoallergenic creams. Once they have dried, they need to be dressed in soft natural clothing made from cotton. A baby's nails should be kept short or covered with mittens to prevent itchy skin from becoming further damaged or infected from excessive scratching. Unfortunately, baby eczema sometimes needs further help and in these cases, the doctor might prescribe the use of antihistamines to relieve the itching; when required it is not uncommon for the child to have steroid cream applied to the affected area but this cannot be done for very long. One thing is certain; this skin disorder is very common, yet remains a difficult form to control and fully overcome.
